Best AI Study Apps for Students, Tested

Which AI study tools genuinely help with coursework, which paywall the useful part, and what to check before you rely on one.

Most "best AI study app" lists are affiliate pages that rank ten tools nobody uses past the trial. This one is organised by task instead, because the honest finding after using these for real coursework is that no single app is good at more than one or two of them.

We build a math solver. So we will be explicit: AI-Math is good at exactly one thing on this list, and we will tell you which apps beat it at everything else.

The five jobs students are actually hiring an app for

  1. Remembering facts and definitions long term.
  2. Understanding assigned readings, lectures and slides.
  3. Getting unstuck on a problem set.
  4. Capturing notes that survive to revision week.
  5. Generating practice at the right difficulty.

Judge every tool against one of these, not against a feature grid.

Job 1: remembering — Anki still wins

Anki is free, open source, ugly, and the most effective study tool most students never install. Its spaced-repetition scheduler is the reason, not any AI. Free on desktop, web and Android; the iOS app costs a one-off fee that funds the project.

Quizlet is faster to start, has a huge library of existing sets, and now generates cards from uploaded material. The trade-off is that its most useful modes — Learn, adaptive testing — sit behind Quizlet Plus, and its default review scheduling is weaker than Anki's.

AI generation of cards is the weakest link in both. Cards generated from a chapter tend toward trivia. Cards you write force you to decide what matters, which is a large part of the benefit. Use generation for definitions and formulas; write conceptual cards yourself.

Where AI-Math fits: it does not. We are not a flashcard app, and our flashcard generator is still in development rather than something you can rely on this semester. Use Anki.

Job 2: understanding sources — NotebookLM

NotebookLM is the clearest recent improvement in student tooling. You upload your own lecture slides, PDFs and notes, and it answers only from those, with citations back into the source. Because it is grounded, it invents far less than a chat assistant asked about a paper it has never seen, and the citation lets you verify in one click. Free tier is generous.

General assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — remain better for "explain this differently" and for open-ended conceptual questions where you want outside knowledge. They are worse when accuracy against a specific source matters.

The failure mode to avoid in this category is the AI summary you read once and feel good about. Summaries produce fluency, not memory. Convert what you learn into cards or practice problems or it will not survive the week.

Job 3: getting unstuck on problems — depends entirely on subject

For math and quantitative science, general chat assistants have improved a lot and still produce confident sign and arithmetic errors inside long derivations without flagging them. Tools built for math run the manipulation through a symbolic engine so the algebra is verified rather than generated.

  • Wolfram Alpha — the deepest computational engine here, exceptional for checking a result, and its step-by-step working is behind Pro.
  • Symbolab and Mathway — broad coverage, answers free, steps paywalled to varying degrees.
  • Photomath — the best pure phone-camera experience; the richest explanations are in the paid tier.
  • Khanmigo — deliberately refuses to give the answer and coaches instead, which is the right design for learning and the wrong one at 1am the night before a deadline.
  • AI-Math — our tool. The specific thing it does that most free options do not is show the full worked steps without a paywall on the steps, across algebra, calculus, statistics and arithmetic. It is a solver, not a tutor who knows your course; our conversational tutor is in development, not shipped.

For writing-heavy subjects, a general assistant used as a critic beats one used as a writer. "Here is my argument, what is the weakest link" is useful and safe. Generating prose you submit is neither.

For code, the coding assistants are so far ahead of general study apps that this category should not be in the comparison at all.

Job 4: notes — see the dedicated comparison

Note apps are a genuinely different market and equation support is the deciding factor for math and science students. We covered it separately in best note-taking apps for students. Short version: OneNote for handwriting, Obsidian for durable text notes with LaTeX, Notion if you want structure and can live with weaker math input.

Job 5: practice generation

This is where AI is quietly strongest and least marketed. Give a model one solved example and ask for fifteen structurally identical problems at the same difficulty, and you get a usable problem set in seconds. Two caveats that matter: verify the answers, because generated answer keys are wrong more often than generated questions, and ask for variation in structure, not just different numbers, or you will drill one pattern and fail the exam that varies it.

How to evaluate any study app in ten minutes

  • Where is the paywall? Free answer with paid steps is the standard pattern. Decide whether the free half is useful to you before you invest time.
  • Does it show its work? Any tool that returns only a result cannot be checked, which makes it useless for learning and risky for grades.
  • Does it cite or ground? For anything source-based, ungrounded output is a liability.
  • Does it make you retrieve? Apps that make you produce the answer beat apps that show you the answer. This single criterion separates tools that raise grades from tools that feel productive.
  • What happens to your notes if you stop paying? Export matters more than people expect in month eighteen.

An honest stack

Anki for retention, NotebookLM for readings, one general assistant for explanation, a math-specific solver with visible steps for problem sets, and one note app you actually open. Five tools, most of them free at the tier you need. That beats any single app currently marketed as an all-in-one, including ours.

Passively reading AI-generated summaries has the same weak effect as passively rereading a textbook. An app helps to the extent that it makes you retrieve and attempt rather than read.
