Reading a Fraction

In 34\frac{3}{4} the bottom number, the denominator, says how many equal pieces one whole was cut into. The top number, the numerator, says how many of those pieces you have. A fraction is also just a division waiting to happen: 34=3├╖4=0.75\frac{3}{4} = 3 \div 4 = 0.75.

Two fractions are equivalent if one is the other with every piece cut smaller. Multiplying top and bottom by the same number is multiplying by 11, so the value never moves:

34=3├Ч24├Ч2=68\frac{3}{4} = \frac{3 \times 2}{4 \times 2} = \frac{6}{8}

That single idea drives everything else on this page тАФ simplifying runs it backwards, and finding a common denominator runs it forwards.

A fraction with a numerator smaller than its denominator is proper and worth less than one whole. When the numerator is larger, it is improper and can be written as a mixed number instead. Both forms are correct; improper fractions are what you calculate with, and mixed numbers are usually what you report.

The Four Operations, Side by Side

Add or subtract тАФ denominators must match first. Rewrite both fractions over a common denominator, then combine the numerators only and leave the denominator alone:

23+16=46+16=56\frac{2}{3} + \frac{1}{6} = \frac{4}{6} + \frac{1}{6} = \frac{5}{6}

Multiply тАФ no common denominator needed. Multiply straight across, tops together and bottoms together:

23├Ч45=815\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{4}{5} = \frac{8}{15}

Divide тАФ flip the second fraction and multiply:

34├╖25=34├Ч52=158\frac{3}{4} \div \frac{2}{5} = \frac{3}{4} \times \frac{5}{2} = \frac{15}{8}

The single biggest source of wrong answers is borrowing the wrong rule: people find a common denominator before multiplying (harmless but wasteful), or add straight across (wrong). Ask which operation you are doing before you touch the numbers.

Converting Between Forms

  • Improper to mixed: divide and keep the remainder. 158\frac{15}{8}: 15├╖8=115 \div 8 = 1 remainder 77, so 1781\frac{7}{8}.
  • Mixed to improper: whole ├Ч\times denominator ++ numerator. 213=2├Ч3+13=732\frac{1}{3} = \frac{2 \times 3 + 1}{3} = \frac{7}{3}. Always do this before multiplying or dividing.
  • Fraction to decimal: divide top by bottom. 78=0.875\frac{7}{8} = 0.875.
  • Decimal to percent: multiply by 100100. 0.875=87.5%0.875 = 87.5\%.
  • Simplify: divide top and bottom by their greatest common factor. 1824├╖66=34\frac{18}{24} \div \frac{6}{6} = \frac{3}{4}.

To compare two fractions, put them over a common denominator or turn both into decimals тАФ 58=0.625\frac{5}{8} = 0.625 beats 35=0.6\frac{3}{5} = 0.6. Never compare by numerator alone.

One habit prevents most fraction errors: estimate before you calculate. 23\frac{2}{3} is a bit over a half and 16\frac{1}{6} is small, so their sum should sit just under 11 тАФ and 56\frac{5}{6} does. If your answer lands somewhere else entirely, you have almost certainly used the wrong rule rather than made an arithmetic slip.

Examples

Step 1: The denominators differ, so find a common one. 33 divides into 66, so the LCD is 66.
Step 2: 23=2├Ч23├Ч2=46\frac{2}{3} = \frac{2 \times 2}{3 \times 2} = \frac{4}{6}; 16\frac{1}{6} is already there.
Step 3: Add the numerators only: 4+16=56\frac{4 + 1}{6} = \frac{5}{6}
Step 4: 55 and 66 share no factor, so it is fully simplified.
Answer: 56\frac{5}{6}

Step 1: Division by a fraction is multiplication by its reciprocal, so flip 25\frac{2}{5} to 52\frac{5}{2}.
Step 2: 34├╖25=34├Ч52\frac{3}{4} \div \frac{2}{5} = \frac{3}{4} \times \frac{5}{2}
Step 3: Multiply straight across: 3├Ч54├Ч2=158\frac{3 \times 5}{4 \times 2} = \frac{15}{8}
Step 4: 15>815 > 8, so convert: 15├╖8=115 \div 8 = 1 remainder 77.
Answer: 158=178\frac{15}{8} = 1\frac{7}{8}

Step 1: A fraction bar means divide: 7├╖87 \div 8.
Step 2: 88 goes into 7070 eight times (6464), remainder 66; into 6060 seven times (5656), remainder 44; into 4040 exactly five times.
Step 3: So 7├╖8=0.8757 \div 8 = 0.875.
Step 4: A percentage is hundredths, so multiply by 100100: 0.875├Ч100=87.50.875 \times 100 = 87.5.
Answer: 0.8750.875, or 87.5%87.5\%

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Common denominators are only needed for addition and subtraction. To multiply, go straight across: numerator times numerator over denominator times denominator, then simplify.

It is simplified when the numerator and denominator share no common factor other than 1. Test the small primes: if both are even, divide by 2; if both digit sums are divisible by 3, divide by 3; and so on until nothing divides both.

Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the same denominator. For example 2 1/3 becomes (2 x 3 + 1)/3 = 7/3. Do this first whenever you are about to multiply or divide.

Put both over 40: 5/8 = 25/40 and 3/5 = 24/40, so 5/8 is bigger. Decimals work just as well тАФ 0.625 against 0.6. Comparing only the numerators, or only the denominators, is unreliable.
