How to Prepare for AP Exams: A Realistic Plan

Most AP revision advice fails for the same reason: it describes an ideal that nobody follows. A plan requiring three hours a day from February will be abandoned in the first busy week and replaced by nothing. What follows is built for the time students actually have — a few hours a week, unevenly distributed, with several exams in the same fortnight.

The core principle is simple and well supported by learning research: you learn what you practise retrieving, not what you practise reading. Almost every mistake below is a variation on forgetting that.

Start from the exam, not the textbook

Before planning anything, do this in one sitting:

  1. Find the Course and Exam Description for your course and read the unit weightings table.
  2. Look at one released free-response set and its scoring guidelines.
  3. Note the section timings and calculator rules.

Twenty minutes here reshapes everything. You will discover that one unit is worth 20% and another is worth 3%, that the free-response rubrics award points for things nobody mentioned in class, and that the pacing constraint is tighter than you assumed. Most students never do this, which is why most revision plans allocate time by chapter number rather than by exam weight.

The eight-week skeleton

Adjust the durations, keep the sequence.

Weeks 1–2: diagnose. Sit one full timed section per course — usually multiple choice, since it is faster to mark. Do not revise first; the point is to find gaps, and revising beforehand hides them. Sort every wrong answer into four categories:

  • Never learned it — a content gap.
  • Learned it, forgot it — a retention gap.
  • Knew it, executed it wrong — a fluency gap, usually algebra.
  • Misread the question — an attention gap.

Each category needs a different fix, and confusing them is the most common reason revision produces no improvement.

Weeks 3–5: rebuild, weighted by the exam. Work only on high-weight units where you have gaps. For each session: 20 minutes reading or watching, then 40 minutes doing problems with the notes closed. That ratio is the whole method. If you cannot do problems with the notes closed, you have not learned it, however clear it felt while reading.

Fluency gaps get short daily drills rather than long sessions — fifteen minutes of derivatives, or fifteen minutes of factoring and equation solving, every day for two weeks, beats one three-hour session.

Weeks 6–7: free response. For maths and science APs this is the highest-value phase. Do a set of released free-response questions each week under time, then mark your own work strictly against the published scoring guidelines. Award only what the rubric literally says. Then rewrite each answer to full marks.

This is uncomfortable and it works, because it exposes the gap between the answer you think you gave and the answer a reader will see. Most students lose 15–20% of their free-response score to omitted units, missing justifications, and answers that do not address the question asked — none of which is a knowledge problem.

Week 8: full rehearsals. Two complete timed exams, ideally at the same time of day as the real thing, with the correct calculator restrictions per section and no phone in the room. Then a final light pass over formulas and definitions. Do not learn new content in the last week; consolidate.

The techniques that actually move scores

Retrieval practice. Close the book and write down everything you know about a topic, then check. Painful, boring, and roughly twice as effective per minute as rereading.

Spacing. Three 40-minute sessions across a week beat one two-hour session, by a wide margin, for retention measured weeks later. Schedule the same topic on days 1, 3 and 8.

Interleaving. Mixed problem sets — where you must first work out which method applies — transfer far better to an exam than blocked sets of twenty identical problems. Blocked practice makes you feel fluent while doing the thing an exam never asks: applying a method you were already told to use.

An error log. One row per mistake: question, topic, error category, and the corrected method in your own words. After thirty rows, the pattern in the error-category column is your revision plan. This is the single highest-return habit in this article.

Explaining aloud. If you cannot explain why a step follows, you have memorised a procedure rather than understood it — and AP free-response questions are built to detect exactly that.

The mistakes that waste the most time

Rereading notes and highlighting. Feels productive, produces the illusion of knowing, transfers almost nothing. The strongest and most replicated finding in the study-technique literature.

Watching videos passively. Fine for a first exposure to a concept, useless as revision. If you are not writing, you are not revising. Pause the video, work the example yourself, then compare.

Working only on your weakest subject. Diminishing returns arrive fast, and meanwhile the subject you were good at decays.

Doing hundreds of practice questions without marking them properly. Volume with no feedback loop is expensive and slow.

Cramming the night before. Sleep consolidates memory. A rested brain on a familiar exam outperforms an exhausted one that saw fifty more problems, every time.

Saving free-response practice for the end. It is the part that most needs feedback and iteration, so it needs the most weeks, not the fewest.

Specifically for maths exams

Maths APs have a failure mode of their own: students revise concepts and lose points on execution.

  • Algebra fluency is the hidden variable. Most lost marks in AP Calculus are algebraic, not calculus. If simplifying a rational expression or handling a log rule takes visible effort, fix that first — it is faster than it sounds and it lifts every question on the paper.   • Learn your calculator's exact permitted uses, and practise the no-calculator sections without one. The single most avoidable disaster is arriving at a no-calculator section having practised everything with one.

  • Redo problems you got wrong, from scratch, a week later. Not reading the solution — solving it again on blank paper. If you cannot reproduce it, you have not learned it yet.

When you have several exams in one fortnight

Triage honestly. Rank your exams by how much a one-point improvement matters to you — a course where you are borderline between a 3 and a 4, and where your target university's credit policy sits at 4, is worth more hours than a course where you are secure or where credit is not offered anyway.

Then protect the fundamentals: sleep, one full rehearsal per exam, and the free-response practice. Those three survive any schedule compression. Everything else is optional.
