When the textbook method confuses you

You may have learned long division by guess and subtract; the textbook may show partial quotients or area model. They get the same answer — pretending otherwise will frustrate the kid and contradict the teacher.

A safer move:

  1. Ask the kid to teach you the method from the textbook. Teaching forces clarity.
