Cosecant, written cscθ, is the reciprocal of sine: cscθ=sinθ1. One of three reciprocal trig functions (along with secθ=1/cosθ and cotθ=1/tanθ).
Domain: all θ where sinθ=0, i.e. θ=kπ for integer k. Range: ∣cscθ∣≥1.
In a right triangle: cscθ=oppositehypotenuse.
Pythagorean identity: 1+cot2θ=csc2θ. Derivative: dxdcscx=−cscxcotx.
Cosecant appears most often in calculus integrals (especially when integrating powers of sin/cos via substitution). In modern practice, students mostly convert csc back to 1/sin to compute, using sin directly.
