What Is the IB Diploma? A Guide for Students

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year, whole-curriculum qualification taken in the final two years of school, most often at ages 16 to 19.   6. The Arts — visual arts, music, theatre, film; or a second subject from groups 1 to 4.

Three or four subjects are taken at Higher Level (HL), roughly 240 teaching hours each, and the remainder at Standard Level (SL), roughly 150 hours. HL subjects go deeper and carry more weight in university admissions and credit decisions.

The two mathematics routes

Since the 2019 syllabus revision, IB mathematics comes in two courses, each available at SL and HL:

  • Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) — algebraic, proof-oriented, calculus-heavy. AA HL is the natural route for anyone heading into mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science or economics at a quantitative university.

The core: TOK, EE and CAS

The three core components are what makes the Diploma distinctive and what makes it heavy.

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) — about 100 hours of study of how knowledge is produced and justified, assessed by an exhibition and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title.
  • Extended Essay (EE) — an independent research paper of up to 4,000 words in a subject of your choice, supervised but not taught.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) — a portfolio of experiences and at least one longer project across the two years. CAS is not graded but must be completed, and an incomplete CAS blocks the Diploma outright.

How the IB Diploma is scored

Each of the six subjects is graded 1 to 7, giving a maximum of 42. Up to 3 additional points come from a matrix combining the TOK and Extended Essay grades (both graded A to E), giving a maximum total of 45 points.

Diploma vs certificate: what "course candidate" means

You do not have to take the full package. A course candidate takes individual IB subjects and receives certificates for each, without TOK, the Extended Essay, CAS or the diploma points. This is common for students who want the depth of one or two IB subjects while following a national curriculum otherwise.

The difference in how universities read them is real. An IB Diploma is a complete school-leaving qualification and many universities make offers directly in IB points ("36 points including 6,6,5 at HL"). IB certificates are read more like individual advanced courses — valuable, but they do not substitute for a leaving qualification.

For university credit in the United States, AP is the more universally recognised currency, and HL IB subjects are usually the ones that attract credit while SL subjects often attract none. Outside the US, the IB Diploma travels better as a stand-alone qualification. Selective admissions offices are comfortable with both and will read whichever your school offers — what they penalise is taking the easiest available option, not choosing the wrong system.

Is the IB Diploma worth it?

Honestly: for the right student, yes; for many, a strong AP schedule is the better trade.

Take the Diploma if you write well and fast, can manage long-horizon independent work without weekly deadlines, and want a coherent programme rather than a set of separate exams. The Extended Essay in particular is genuine preparation for university-style research that almost nothing in a typical high school curriculum matches.

Do not take it if your strengths are narrowly quantitative and your target course only cares about maths and physics. The IB forces breadth — a language, a humanity, an art or a second subject — and a student who wants to spend two years on mathematics and physics will spend a large share of their time on subjects that do not serve that goal. That is a legitimate reason to choose AP or a national system instead.

The workload is the most commonly underestimated part. Between internal assessments in six subjects, the Extended Essay, the TOK essay and CAS, the deadline density in the middle of year two is the thing that breaks students — not the difficulty of any single subject.
