Tutoring prices are quoted confidently across the web and vary enormously in reality — by country, city, level, and whether a platform is taking a cut. Here are the ranges that hold up, what moves a price within them, and the alternatives that are genuinely cheaper without being useless.
Treat every figure below as a band, not a quote. A tutor in a large coastal US city and one in a small town may differ by a factor of two for identical work.
Typical hourly rates

United Kingdom: roughly 25 to 50 pounds an hour for GCSE, 30 to 60 for A-level, with London materially higher.
Online marketplaces: Preply and similar platforms with international tutors start far lower, sometimes 10 to 25 dollars an hour. Wyzant and comparable US-focused platforms typically sit in the 35 to 80 range.
Learning centres (Kumon, Mathnasium and equivalents) price monthly rather than hourly, commonly somewhere between 150 and 400 dollars a month depending on location and programme. Per contact hour this can look cheap, but sessions are usually small-group and worksheet-driven rather than individual.
What actually moves the price
- Level. The single biggest factor. The pool of people who can teach multivariable calculus well is far smaller than the pool who can teach fractions.
- Location. Metro areas run 30 to 50 percent above regional averages for in-person work.
- In person versus online. Online is generally 20 to 40 percent cheaper.
- Credentials and results. A tutor with documented score improvements charges what they charge, and often has a waiting list.
- Agency versus independent. Agencies add a substantial margin for vetting and matching.
- Package versus single session. Blocks of six or ten usually carry a 10 to 20 percent discount.
- Urgency. Booking a calculus tutor two weeks before finals costs more than booking in September, when it would also have worked better.
What a human tutor gives you that nothing else does
This is the part price comparisons usually skip, and it is the reason tutoring is worth the money for some students and a waste for others.
A good tutor diagnoses. A student failing algebra tests rarely has an algebra problem; they have a fractions problem, or a negative-signs problem, or they cannot translate a sentence into an equation. Finding which one, from watching them work, is the skill. No software does this, because it requires watching a person hesitate.
A good tutor reads the room. They notice the student went quiet from embarrassment rather than confusion, that the anxiety is about the teacher rather than the topic, that today needs an easy win rather than the planned material.
A good tutor creates accountability. Someone is expecting work on Thursday. For many students this is the whole mechanism.
A good tutor adapts to the specific context — this teacher's marking, this exam board, this syllabus's peculiar emphasis.
If a student is anxious, disengaged, or has a gap they cannot self-diagnose, a human is not a luxury and no tool substitutes for one. We build math software and we will say that plainly.
The cheaper alternatives, in order
Free, and closest to a tutor:
- Your school's tutoring centre and instructor office hours. Free, targeted at the exact course, and chronically under-attended. This is the best value in education and it is sitting unused.
- Public library live tutoring. Many US library systems provide free real-time tutoring to cardholders, commonly through Tutor.com. Check before paying anyone.
- Peer tutoring programmes, often free through a school or students' union.
Cheap:
- Group tutoring. Three or four families sharing a tutor cuts the per-student cost by half or more, and hearing other students' mistakes is genuinely instructive. The most underused paid option.
- Reduced frequency. Fortnightly rather than weekly, with structured independent work between sessions, often produces similar results at half the cost — provided the between-session work actually happens.
- A less senior tutor. A strong undergraduate teaching high school algebra costs a fraction of a career specialist and is frequently better at it, being closer to having learned it.
Free, for the narrow thing it does:
- Khan Academy for structured content and graded exercises.
- A step-by-step solver for the specific moment when you are stuck alone and your answer disagrees with the book. The arrangement that works best per dollar
For most families the efficient structure is not choosing between a tutor and software. It is fewer paid tutor hours, used well, plus free tools between them: a tutor every second week for diagnosis, direction and accountability; a step-by-step solver during independent work so a stuck evening does not become a lost week; and a specific short list of practice problems rather than "revise the chapter".
That typically halves the tutoring bill while keeping the part of tutoring that software cannot replace.
